MEMORIAL DAY
Many years ago, when I was a youngster (and that was about 70 years ago) May 30th was called Decoration Day. It was a day people decorated the graves of their loved ones, especially veterans. It was a day that included a parade and usually a picnic.

The parade had many bands, veterans groups, boy scouts, and a few cars carrying veterans who could not walk the distance of the parade. A favorite band was the Scottish band, in their kilts, playing their bagpipes. There are often special ceremonies on this holiday to honor those fallen.

It is impossible to determine the origin of this holiday. Two dozen cities and towns make claim for this honor. It appears that organizations of women were decorating the graves of Confederate soldiers before the end of the Civil war. It was first observed nationally on May 30, 1868 when flowers were placed on the graves of all civil war veterans at Arlington cemetery. Now deceased veterans of all wars are honored.

In 1971 Congress changed the date to the last Monday in May to ensure a three day weekend. So on that day remember to fly your American flag. - Jim
