A Picky Eater's Guide to Healthy Food

Fortunately, if you’re trying to add more healthy food to your meals, there are a few ways to gradually embrace the transition. If you’re highly selective about what you eat, consider these five tips to make the changes easier.

1. Start Small

Getting used to change takes time. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself by diving right into an entirely new meal plan. If you’re a picky eater, slowly introduce healthy foods into your diet. Be patient with yourself, trying one ingredient at a time. Keep in mind that you don’t have to like everything you try to achieve success. 

2. Mix Up Your Meals

The easiest way to make changes is to hide nutritious ingredients in your favorite dishes. If pizza’s the only food you enjoy at dinner, for instance, try topping it with fresh local produce, such as sliced mushrooms or roasted broccoli. Enhance your standard crust by mixing shredded kale into the dough, or replace the typical gluten with riced cauliflower – when topped with the rich cheese and tomato sauce you adore, you might not even notice the swap. 

3. Give Your Taste Buds a Break

If you’re accustomed to eating salty, sugary, or processed foods, your taste buds may not be able to recognize subtler natural flavors. To reset your flavor recognition abilities, make an effort to cut artificial items from your daily menu. You may need to start by eliminating one or two items at a time. Once you’ve rebooted your palate, try healthy foods that were once unappealing to find out if they offer up a whole different taste profile.

4. Make a Drink

To make produce more palatable, consider putting them in a form that you don’t have to chew. By blending fruits and vegetables together into an appealing smoothie, you won’t have to worry about any strange textures or smells ruining the experience.

5. Select by Season

Buy produce at the right time. While you might find cherries in December or winter squash in July, these items won’t be at their peak. You might find that while you never liked the watery, mealy texture of imported strawberries you ate in the past, you’re hooked on the fresh, sweet, and vibrant varieties grown locally and organically.
